And besides seemingly productive tasks like rearranging your sock drawer or alphabetizing your canned goods, the Internet will – if you let it – pull you in and drag you down. Your friends over at iMyTubeBlogFace will have to wait… you’re on the clock;

Set Aside Time For Specific Tasks
In a way, this is part of staying organized and killing distractions: you restrict your time for certain tasks.

Throughout the course of the day it’ll be tempting to send or reply to every email every few minutes, or chat with either friends or clients on the phone. But you are at a real job, even if you’re still wearing pj’s (yes, I’m talkin’ to you).

Hopefully, you haven’t burned any bridges so keep in touch with ex- coworkers and, if appropriate, vendors. Contacting clients of your last employer, though, probably isn’t a great idea; your relationship with your ex-employer may prove to be more valuable in the long run;

Define Your Terms
You are a business, and, among other parameters that you’ve established, you have fees, you keep reasonable business hours and you have payment terms that keep you self-employed. Prices are (and should be) negotiable, time is flexible; but getting paid is neither of these.

Be fair with your clients, both with your prices for your service and with the time you spend working with them; but you need to get paid, and on terms you decide. Your clients should respect this or you won’t be in business for very long;

Outsource
There may be times that, to successfully complete a project, you might need to enlist the help of someone with an expertise that you don’t possess. In fact, sometimes the growth of a successful business is not measured by the hours you put in doing the labor, but by how you delegate work and manage various aspects of your project that can be handled by someone else;

Work With Your Client, Not For Your Client
Think of your relationship with your client as a partnership: you are an extension of their business, applying your particular skill to help them achieve their goal. You might be designing their web site, writing the copy for their annual report or handling their public relations; your goals should be their goals, because your success depends on their success;

Fire Your Client
A controversial statement? Maybe. But consider this: if you devote a lot of your time and effort to a client that has high demands but is never satisfied, what have you accomplished? I had a client that called me almost daily and, it seemed, gave me a lot of work. But at the end of the year, after having devoted myself to try and meet their expectations, I did a breakout of how much I earned per job from this client: it was far less than what I thought, and the reality was that it was only a few small- to medium-sized jobs I worked on, although it felt like much more when I considered the time I put in.

If you are spending a lot of unproductive (and unprofitable) time trying to please a client, it’s probably best for you both if you part company;

Do Your Work, Then Step Back…
… the only path to serenity. Wise words from Lao-tzu . If you’re passionate about your work, sometimes it can eclipse the reason you work and why you went out on your own : A different way of life. I work weekends, nights and even a lot of holidays, because sometimes requires you to make the occasional unexpected expense to complete the work situation and to complete it.

But no one says you have to work 14-hour days, 6-7 days a week; it defeats the purpose of quitting a salaried job to become an entrepreneur. Don’t feel guilty if you take some time off;

1. “That’s not my job”
You know what? Many bosses are simple souls who think that your job is to do what’s asked of you. So even if you’re assigned a task that is to say, in effect, not your work, refrain from saying so. Instead, try to find out why your boss assign you this task – there may be a valid reason. If you think that doing the job is a bad idea (as in, bad for the company) you can try to explain why and suggest how it might be best done by someone else. This may work, as the boss. 2. “It’s not my problem”
When people say something is not their problem it makes them look like they don’t care. This does not endear them to anybody, especially the boss. If a problem is brewing and you have nothing constructive to say, it’s better to say nothing at all. Even better is to pitch in and try to help. Because, ultimately, a problem in the workplace is everyone’s problem. We’re all in it together.

3. “It’s not my fault”
Yet another four words to be avoided. Human nature is weird. Claiming that something is not our fault often has the result of making people suspect it is. Besides, what’s the real issue here? It’s that something went wrong and needs to be fixed. That’s what people should be thinking about–not who is to blame.

4. “I can only do one thing at a time”
News flash: Complaining you are overworked will not make your boss feel sorry for you or go easier on you. Instead, a boss will think: (1) you resent your job, and/or (2) you aren’t up to your job. Everybody, especially nowadays, feels pressured and overworked. If you’re trying to be funny, please note that some sarcasm is funny and lightens the mood. Some just ticks people off.

5. “I am way overqualified for this job”
Hey, maybe you are. But the fact is, this is the job you have. You agreed to take it on and, while you may now regret that decision, it’s still your job. Complaining that it’s beneath you only makes you look bad. Plus, coworkers doing similar jobs may resent and dislike you. And guess what? Bosses will not think, “Oh, this is a superior person whom I need to promote.” Nope, they’ll think, “What a jerk.”

6. “This job is easy! Anyone could do it!”
Maybe what you’re trying to convey is that here you’re so brilliant your work is easy. Unfortunately, it comes from the sound more like, “This work is stupid.” The Boss don’t like hearing that any work is stupid. Neither they keep hearing that a really easy job. It breaks down the entire company. When a task is simple, be glad and do it as fast as you can. Even “stupid” the work must be done.

7. “It can’t be done”
Saying something can’t be done is like waving a red flag in a boss’s eyes. Even if the thing that is being suggested is truly impossible, saying it can make you look ineffective or inefficient. Better to play detective. Why the boss is asking you to do whatever it is? What’s the problem that needs to be resolved? What’s the point? Search for doable ways to solve this problem or to reach that goal. That’s what bosses really want. Most of them do not expect the impossible.

Discover what’s going on
Bosses like everyone’s mood swings. So, before you do anything to solve the problem, determine why the attempt of your supervisor at work show the slightest interest in it. It’s possible the boss is dealing with a temporary situation such as a marital issue that will eventually pass, said Catherine Crowley, co-author of “Working for You Isn’t Working for Me.” But there’s also the likelihood that something more serious is going on with his or her job. Some bosses lose interest because they’re being pushed out, while others get so fed up that they can’t put any more energy into their work.

Try to ask discreet questions to find out what’s going on.

“You really need to dig deep and see,” says Lynn Taylor, a workplace consultant. “They may just be more forthcoming than you might imagine.”

Try to help, regardless
It’s upsetting to work with a manager who’s detached or distracted. Disinterested bosses “bring down the energy level and motivation” of everyone in a workplace, says Robert I. Sutton, a professor of management science at Stanford University, and the author of the forthcoming book “Good Boss, Bad Boss.”

“The indifference is contagious,” he says.

But while you may resent your boss’s behavior, don’t gossip with other employees or say things that are sarcastic or insulting. Instead, look for opportunities to step in and help.

Many burned-out bosses are more than willing to hand over some responsibilities. So, if there’s a project that could use some much-needed attention, volunteer to work on it, says Gini Graham Scott, the author of “A Survival Guide for Working With Bad Bosses.”

It will help your boss, and make you look good. But be careful. Don’t overstep your boundaries or threaten your manager’s job. The boss may have given up, but he or she is still in charge.

“You don’t want to sort of look like you’re trying to take over the position,” Scott says.

More assertive action
If that doesn’t work, it may be time to take more direct steps. At one company, Sutton says, four or five influential employees gathered together and confronted their boss, saying: “We’ve admired the work you’ve done in the past, but if you don’t change your behavior, we think you should step down.”

It was a risky move, and one that’s not appropriate for every company. But those employees felt OK going with the direct approach, since they knew it was difficult for the boss to fire them.

Other workers don’t have that luxury, so Sutton says there may be subtler ways to fight back.

If a large group of employees makes note of the boss on a workplace attitude survey, that could alert the higher-ups. Or, if the company’s clients express frustration about the indifferent manager, that could lead to some change, too.

Then there’s the other option: talking to your boss’ boss. Telling higher-ups there’s a problem can sometimes be the best solution. But it’s not without risks.

If you go above your boss’ head, he or she will likely get angry or upset, and may become even more difficult to work with, says Wayne A. Hochwarter, a professor of management at Florida State University.

“Animals that are injured are a little bit nastier,” he says.

So weigh your options carefully.

If you don’t feel like complaining, try to find a mentor within the company. He or she may be able to serve as a quasi-manager, providing you with guidance that you’re missing from your boss — and possibly some ways to deal with the situation.

Of course, finding another job may be another solution. Craig Isaacs, now the CEO of a computer software company, did that in the early ’90s. He was working at a technology firm, when his boss eventually gave up and stopped doing his job. Isaacs caught his supervisor playing solitaire on the computer, and decided it was time to put his resume together and start looking.

“At some point, you have to decide what it is you want to do,” he says. “If it’s not fun, get out.”

If finding another job isn’t an option, Sutton says workers can take comfort from the television series, “The Office.”

On the show, the boss — Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell — makes a series of humorous mistakes, yet the staff somehow copes.

The lesson, he says : Even if you’ve got an absentee boss, you can still find a way to do good work.

Nonprofit executive director – To attract the best talent, a growing number of nonprofits are hiring executive directors and letting them work wherever they are, says Fell. If you have a management background and a passion for a cause, you may be able to combine them into a job that lets you do good – while also doing the laundry.

“Some are virtual organizations anyway,” she says. “Nonprofits like the lower overhead costs.”

Patient champion/patient advocate – Home-Based Business for Dummies authors Paul and Sarah Edwards noticed the emergence of this home-based job. Patient champions help ill people navigate the complexities of the healthcare system – calling doctors, obtaining copies of medical records, and accompanying patients on doctor visits. Often relatives don’t live close, Paul Edwards notes, so they’ll pay someone to make sure grandma is receiving appropriate care and understanding doctors’ instructions.

“It’s a great service,” he says, “and there’s a great need.”

Virtual juror – If you’re a person with strong opinions, you might make some quick cash serving as an independent juror. Virtual jurors help lawyers evaluate the strengths of their case before they take it to court. Some companies promise up to $60 a case – not bad for an hour’s work at your computer. Major players in this space include Virtual Juror (www.virtualjuror.com) and Online Verdict (www.onlineverdict.com).

Golf instructor – Are you an experienced golf instructor who’s tired of slogging around the course? Virtual instructors review video from golfers and then email or phone in tips on improving their swing. Fell’s seen this one pop up on FlexJobs.

Virtual nurse – Registered Nurse tired of editing the 12-hour shifts, which are on their feet, roaring exploit opportunities in the virtual nursing, says undress for Success’s Lister. In the triage jobs at home, providing nursing staff and phone lines to take calls from people with health emergencies and help them evaluate whether they require an immediate trip to the ER. Lister knows an insurer who provided foster a-line chat with support staff offered to pregnant mothers and helps them to solve small expenditure, without resorting to the more-expensive doctor visits.

“It saves the medical system a lot of money,” she notes, “to contract with organizations that offer nursing support by phone.”

1. Ignoring the culture
“Our company asked 250 advertising and marketing executives what the greatest challenge was for those starting a new job, and four out of ten said it was acclimating to the corporate culture,” says Donna Farrugia, executive director of CreativeGroup.com. How much should you socialize? Do coworkers prefer phone calls, emails, or face-to-face conversations? Dress shoes or sneakers? 4. Not clarifying expectations
When you don’t know what’s expected of you, it’s hard to deliver. Instead, meet with your manager to discuss the responsibilities of your position and how success will be measured. What are the priorities? How should you provide project updates? How will your performance be measured?

5. Refusing to admit mistakes
Everyone makes mistakes, and new hires make plenty. But don’t make the mistake of thinking that if you don’t admit them, nobody notices them. Instead, accept ownership, learn, make the correction, and move on.

6. Rocking the boat
Implementing changes before you get buy-in from others–and before you understand why things are done the way they are–can lead to jeers, not cheers. Instead, keep an open mind. 7. Not asking for feedback

Computer engineering
You can’t go wrong with a computing background. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, computer software engineer will be one of the fastest growing professions this decade. But don’t think this major limits you to working at computer software or hardware company. “Having that knowledge can put you in any industry, from where publishing is going to where finance is going to where government is going,” Pollak says. “There’s a big effort right now to computerize the nation’s health-care records. That will take a lot of elegant engineering,” Shatkin adds, noting that a significant portion of the 2009 federal stimulus package was designated for this purpose. Physics
Pursuing a PhD, and eventually a research position in physics, probably won’t put you over $100,000 a year, Lee says.
